To travel to Canada, citizens of several countries must get a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), commonly known as a visiting visa or entry visa. This website contains advice for assisting family members who need to apply for a visa.
Request a visiting visa for family members. Before you leave your home country, your family member(s) may apply online or through the Visa Application for a visitor visa (or an open work permit in the case of spouses).
VAC that serves your country of citizenship or legal residency. This can be done concurrently with your application for a study permit.
If you are already in Canada and want to invite your relatives to join you, send the necessary documentation to support their visiting visa applications:
Required only if inviting a spouse or child to come stay with you during your studies.
If you are inviting a non-spouse family member (for example, your parents or siblings), they must present proof of sufficient cash for their stay in Canada (bank statements, pay stubs, etc.). They must also demonstrate a significant ties to their home nation (work, business, family, etc.).
Even if your family member is travelling from a nation whose people do not require a visa to visit Canada, we strongly advise you to send an invitation letter and the accompanying documentation. When visitors arrive, immigration inspectors frequently enquire about the purpose of their visit; having the invitation letter from you, as well as the other documentation, might make this procedure go more smoothly. Extending a trip
You can mention your spouse/partner in your application if you will be accompanied by him or her. They can apply for a spousal work permit. For additional information, please see our Work Permits page.
If you are bringing your children, we urge that you include them in your application and request study permits for them, regardless of whether they will be attending primary or secondary school. If they are too young to attend school, kids can enter Canada as guests with only their passport and, if necessary, a visitor visa or electronic travel authorization (ETA). Visitors are usually permitted to stay in Canada for up to six months.
Once in Canada, you should extend your child's status before the allowed visit term expires. You can apply on their behalf for an extension of their visitor status. A visitor record allows children to attend school. They are not required to have a study permission.
If you need assistance selecting schools or daycare for your children, please contact the Family Care Office at the University.
You may be eligible for 'domestic' tuition expenses if you are a dependent of a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or temporary worker. Please visit the University's Student Accounts homepage and chat with your registrar's office to see if you qualify.
